Jesus taught us to pray and ask for forgiveness because we ourselves have extended forgiveness.
The best way to experience the mercy and goodness of God is to extend it to others.
We like to turn inward to see see if we feel God's steadfast love. Yet He commands us to give it to others. I have seen many Christians who are not experiencing God in their lives because they refuse to extend that very same God-like character to others.
John said we cannot say we love God (have intimacy with Him) and hate our brother at the same time.
In like manner, if you show mercy to others, you shall receive mercy from God Himself.
